Brandee Younger’s new album Gadabout Season feels like wandering through a sunny park with no plans at all.
Every track on her eighth release, with guests like Shabaka, Courtney Bryan, Niia, and Josh Johnson, swirls together light jazz, sharp classical touches, and the deep feeling of classic R&B, all wrapped around her gentle harp playing; it’s as if she’s letting us peek into a world where discovery and hope are always possible. She even uses Alice Coltrane’s old harp, which is pretty cool and gives the songs a magical thread. We sometimes wish we could play an instrument as beautifully as she does.

James Holden & Wacław Zimpel: The Universe Will Take Care of You [Border Community]
When James Holden and Wacław Zimpel teamed up for The Universe Will Take Care of You, they created six wild improvisations that bounce from dreamy synths to wild clarinet, and then to all sorts of other sounds—lap steel, organ, electric piano, you name it. Sometimes the music feels like a rollercoaster, with the synths spiking and swirling, and other times it’s calm, like floating in space. Zimpel switches instruments so fast you might miss it if you blink.
