Big Thief Bassist Max Oleartchik Leaves Band

Big Thief shared the news that Max Oleartchik is leaving the band.

“We have endless love for each other and are thankful for all our years together,” they said. “Max has been vital to who we are.” The group asked fans to trust and support them during this big change, which was made with respect for everyone involved. Big Thief’s full statement is below.

Max, born in Tel Aviv and son of musician Alon Oleartchik, met Buck Meek at a Berklee summer program as a teen. They reconnected later in Brooklyn, leading Max to join Big Thief in 2015. He played on all their albums: Masterpiece, Capacity, U.F.O.F., Two Hands, and Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You.

I think it’s always hard when bands go through changes like this.

The band’s message:

A message from Adrianne, Buck, James, and Max –

After many beautiful years together, Max is no longer in Big Thief. Our love for each other is infinite, and we are so grateful for all we have shared these many years together since the beginning of our journey as a band. We wouldn’t be who we are without Max. This separation marks the end of an era, and the beginning of a new one for Big Thief.

This change was made for interpersonal reasons with mutual respect in our hearts. It’s a big change for us and the four of us ask for your trust, respect, and care as we grow into the next chapter of our lives.

The future might look different now but maybe that’s exciting too!
