Big Thief Performs Grandmother on Fallon

Last night, Big Thief walked onto the The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon stage and played “Grandmother” from their Double Infinity album.

Instead of just the usual three, the group had extra help—wind chimes, shakers, congas filling the air, as more musicians joined, plus backup singers and even another guitar player tagging along. “Grandmother” floated through the studio, and you can actually watch the whole performance down below if you want, honestly it’s pretty cool.

By the way, if seeing them live sounds fun after that, you should know they’re still in the middle of their big tour, but time’s ticking, and the last of their North American shows wraps up on November 7, so, you know, move fast if you want a ticket.

Actually, Double Infinity, the new album, just dropped via 4AD not even that long ago; along with “Grandmother,” it features singles like “Words,” “Los Angeles,” “Incomprehensible,” and “All Night All Day.” The “Words” video is their first real music video in, like, forever—since 2017! Also, this album is their first without Max Oleartchik laying down the bass.

Fans sometimes wonder what the band will do next because they’re always switching things up.

If you want to read more, Emma Madden’s got this profile called “Big Thief on Love, Politics, and Staying Together,” and “Vampire Empire” also sits nicely at No. 44 on “The 100 Best Songs of the 2020s So Far.”
