After struggling with bankruptcy, Avant Gardner LLC has now asked for permission to tear down a huge part of its Brooklyn club site.
The request is about knocking down a 32,000-square-foot, three-floor temporary building, which everyone knows is the Mirage, even though the paperwork doesn’t actually use the name, according to Brooklyn Paper. Since the club couldn’t get the green light to reopen because of safety and tech problems, Avant Gardner had to file for Chapter 11 last August, giving up its property to a lender.
It’s kind of wild how the Mirage started as just a pop-up back in 2015, but then it turned into one of the coolest places to go out in East Williamsburg. After a big renovation that got a lot of attention, people rushed to get it open again, but then the city’s Department of Buildings stepped in and called it unsafe and a fire risk.
Fans think it’s sad when a place with so many memories has to close.
For now, the Great Hall and Kings Hall are still open, but who knows what happens next.
