Donald Trump has been playing songs by Celine Dion and Isaac Hayes at his rallies, and their teams are not pleased.
Trump used Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On,” leading her to declare on social media, “In no way is this use authorized, and Celine Dion does not endorse this or any similar use.” She added a touch of sarcasm with, “…And really, THAT song?” Meanwhile, Hayes’ estate is threatening to sue for $3 million because Trump has been using “Hold On, I’m Coming” for years without permission. Back in 2017, Sam Moore performed at Trump’s inauguration event stating he wouldn’t be intimidated by the left side from doing what he felt was right for the country. The Hayes family said they’ve repeatedly asked Trump to stop but he ignored them. Their lawyer accused him of “wilfully and brazenly” infringing copyright.
Fans sometimes wonder why these issues keep happening with politicians and music.
Other artists have also spoken out against Trump using their music. Johnny Marr was furious about Trump’s use of the Smiths’ “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want,” saying it should be shut down immediately. Sinéad O’Connor’s estate stated she would have been deeply hurt and insulted by her work being used in such a manner. They even called Trump a “Biblical devil.”
