Dry Cleaning just announced a brand new album coming out really soon.
Their third record, Secret Love, drops January 9 through 4AD, and to celebrate, they’ve put out a fresh single called “Hit My Head All Day”—go ahead and give it a listen below if you’re curious. Florence Shaw shared that this track explores how both our minds and bodies can get twisted by outside forces. She said, “The song is about manipulation of the body and mind,” and added, “The lyrics were initially inspired by the use of misinformation on social media by the far right. There are powerful people that seek to influence our behavior for their own gain; to buy certain things, to vote a certain way. I find it hard to read people’s intentions and decide who to trust, even in everyday life. It’s easy to fall under the influence of a sinister stranger who seems like a friend.”
They put together the album in a bunch of different places, starting in Chicago at The Loft, which is Jeff Tweedy’s spot, then heading over to Dublin for some noisy sessions with Alan Duggan and Daniel Fox from Gilla Band. The final stop was Black Box in France, where Cate Le Bon took the reins as producer—pretty wild mix of locations and people.
Fans sometimes wonder what it’s like to make music all over the world like that.
Dry Cleaning still have more shows lined up for 2025, including a big night at Brooklyn’s Warsaw on October 2, and then they’re off to cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Brighton, London, and a bunch of other places in Europe.
Oh, and if you want to look back, there’s an interview called “Dry Cleaning’s Everyday Surrealism,” plus their first album New Long Leg made it onto a pretty important best-of-the-decade list.
