Ethel Cain just let everyone know that her next album, Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You, is dropping on August 8, and the first song from it, “Nettles,” is already out.
She pretty much did everything for “Nettles”—from singing and mixing to playing a bunch of instruments like the banjo, piano, and all kinds of guitars, plus she took care of a lot of the technical stuff herself. Other musicians joined in too: Dillon Hodges played some banjo and acoustic guitar, Bryan De Leon was on drums, Matthew Tomasi handled electric guitar, Donny Carpenter played fiddle, Steven Colyer was on the organ, and Todd Beene added pedal steel.
On social media, Cain said, “this was the very first song i ever wrote in the alabama house where i finally finished preacher’s daughter. i didn’t even realize what story i was writing yet but i think subconsciously, because i knew how preacher’s daughter was going to end, i wanted to go back in time to a moment of sweetness. i hope you enjoy the greenery, i love this song with all my heart ♡ (and all 10 versions of it across the past 4 years).”
Sometimes, fans just want to hear something new that feels familiar.
The album Preacher’s Daughter came before this one, but in between, Cain also put out an experimental project called Perverts that was pretty different from her usual style.
