Gulfer Final EP Released

In May, Montreal’s emo and indie-rock band Gulfer said they were breaking up.

Even though their last album, Third Wind, came out in February, they’re giving us one more treat with the new Lights Out EP. This five-song collection is more experimental and has a shoegaze feel. Charles-David DubĂ© handled the mixing and mastering. You can listen to it below.

“This is one of our favorite releases,” said Vincent Ford, who sings and plays guitar. “Five years ago, these songs wouldn’t have been possible for us, but this is where we are now. We’ve always used this band as a way to be creative and show our influences through our music. It feels right to end with these songs that we’re really proud of making together. Hope you all enjoy it : )”

The band shared earlier this year that they wanted to stop so they could move on to new things. They have two final shows: July 19 at Monarch Tavern in Toronto and July 20 at Rainbow Bistro in Ottawa.

I think it’s cool when bands decide to end on their own terms.

Gulfer started back in 2011 with Vincent Ford, David Mitchell on bass and vocals, and Simon MaillĂ© on drums. They released several EPs before their first album What Gives, which came out in 2015. MaillĂ© left the next year; Julien Daoust joined as drummer, and Joseph Therriault took over guitar and vocals too. Their first recordings with Daoust and Therriault were for the 2018 album Dog Bless. In 2020, they released a self-titled LP followed by a live album called Live in Japan. Their latest full-length was February’s Third Wind.

This journey might be ending for them .
