Julien Baker and Torres have teamed up for a new album called Send a Prayer My Way, dropping on April 18 through Matador, and it’s got a country twist.
Torres, also known as Mackenzie Scott, shared how her song “Sylvia” came to be. One morning, while making coffee at home before picking up her dog Sylvia from a shelter, she heard Dolly Parton’s “Cracker Jack” on the radio. It made her cry because it felt like the universe was saying Sylvia was meant for her. Originally just fostering Sylvia, she realized that pets are family and wanted to write a song capturing that feeling: “a song that people could feel in their chest within five seconds of turning on the radio.”
Back in 2016, Baker and Torres had already imagined working together on an album. Last year they released “Sugar in the Tank” and even performed it live on TV with Baker playing banjo and Torres rocking out on electric guitar.
Fans really love when artists join forces; it feels magical.
Baker has done other collaborations too—like the Grammy-winning The Record with Phoebe Bridgers and Lucy Dacus in 2023—and Scott’s latest solo work was What an Enormous Room in 2024.
