Marc Maron just announced he’s wrapping up his legendary podcast, WTF With Marc Maron, this fall after almost sixteen years.
He let everyone know about the big decision while chatting with John Mulaney on a recent episode, explaining that both he and Brendan McDonald, his right-hand guy, are just worn out and ready to move on, but they feel really good about everything they’ve made together. “Sixteen years we’ve been doing this, and we’ve decided that we had a great run,” Maron said, adding, “Now, basically, it’s time, folks. It’s time. WTF is coming to an end. It’s our decision. We’ll have our final episode sometime in the fall.” You can check out the whole episode below.
Back when WTF first started in September 2009, it was just Maron venting about life and talking things out with his comedian friends, but soon the show turned into a place where all kinds of famous people showed up to have deep, funny, and honest talks. Maron always had this relaxed, slightly confused vibe that made people open up and share stories nobody had heard before, sometimes even making them laugh at things they never expected.
Fans sometimes wish these cool things could go on forever.
Over the years, Maron recorded close to 1,700 episodes, talking to everyone from Barack Obama and Carol Burnett to Ariana Grande and John Dwyer from Osees. Even though the show was usually funny, Maron didn’t avoid tough subjects; he had a really emotional interview with Robin Williams in 2010, and after his girlfriend Lynn Shelton died in 2020, he got super real about his feelings on the podcast.
Nobody knows exactly what Maron will do next, but he’s already signed up for some new stuff. He’s going to act in Deliver Me From Nowhere, a movie about Bruce Springsteen, where Jeremy Allen White plays Bruce and Maron is Chuck Plotkin, the producer who made Springsteen’s Nebraska album sound so good.
