Mariah Carey to Receive 2025 MTV VMAs Video Vanguard Award

Mariah Carey is finally getting the Video Vanguard Award at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards.

This year, she’s up for Best R&B with “Type Dangerous,” but it’s wild to think that even though so many stars like Katy Perry, Shakira, and Rihanna have already won both regular VMAs and the Vanguard, Mariah has never actually taken home a VMA herself—just a bunch of nominations over the years. The show will happen on September 7 at UBS Arena, which is kind of perfect because that’s in Long Island, and Mariah grew up in Huntington, not too far away. LL Cool J, who’s also from Long Island, is the host this time, and that’s a cool twist since Mariah was the one who gave him the Vanguard Award way back in 1997.

Here for It All, her new album, drops September 26, and it’s been a long wait since Caution came out in 2018. You’ll find both “Type Dangerous” and “Sugar Sweet” on it.

Fans honestly can’t believe it took this long for her to get the award.

Sometimes when you think about award shows, it feels like the rules just make no sense, like someone’s spinning a giant wheel backstage or maybe there’s a secret handshake nobody told Mariah about. “Type Dangerous” is up for an award this year, so maybe this is finally her time.
