Motion City Soundtrack is back with a brand new album after being away for ten years.
The group’s seventh record, The Same Old Wasted Wonderful World, drops on September 17 on Epitaph, and the first single, “She Is Afraid,” already has a music video that looks like it came straight out of Severance. When the band got together at Electrical Audio in Chicago with Sean O’Keefe, they made 11 songs for this album, and some of them even have guest spots from Patrick Stump, Mat Kerekes, and Deanna Belos. Before this, they actually put out “Stop Talking” for the movie Didi, so that was technically their first song since they got back together.
After Panic Stations came out in 2015, the band split up and everyone moved to different places, plus Justin Pierre started doing his own thing. But then, on New Year’s Eve 2019, they all got back together—Pierre, Joshua Cain, Matt Taylor, Jesse Johnson, and Tony Thaxton—and managed to go on tour right before everything shut down for the pandemic. That’s when they started thinking about this new album and what it could be.
Fans always get excited when a band returns after such a long break.
Justin Pierre shared, “I think that if you look at a lot of our past records, it’s about ‘What’s wrong? What am I not getting right? Why do I feel fucking crazy? Why can’t I figure this out’… and I figured it out. It’s almost like I felt I didn’t have an identity [in the past] and now by working through the hard stuff, I know who I am.” Sometimes, musicians sound like they’re growing up right along with us.

Sometimes, I wonder if bands ever get nervous starting over again, or if they just jump right in like nothing happened.
