New Chills Album Features Martin Phillipps’ Early Recordings

Martin Phillipps, who started the Chills, passed away in June at 61. He had been working on an album filled with songs he penned as a young man but never officially recorded. This collection, called Spring Board: The Early Unrecorded Songs, is set to be released on February 28, 2025, through Fire.

Phillipps shared how making this album was quite the journey. “All of the songs needed varying degrees of rewriting,” he said. “A 60-year old man couldn’t just stick to the lyrics of those formative years. And some of the songs were just vague recollections, incomplete, only blossoming during recording.” Helping out on this project were Neil Finn from Crowded House and folks from bands like Fur Patrol and Split Enz.

Sometimes we realize that memories can change shape when we revisit them after many years.

The track “If This World Was Made for Me” is available for listening below; check it out along with the album’s full list of songs.
