The last part of the Reset tale.
We had always dreamed of recording with a Mexican mariachi band ever since “Tropic of Cancer” from the Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper album, but it never seemed possible.
Last year, before heading to Mexico for a concert, we asked our friend Oswaldo Terrones if he knew any mariachi bands. He did! Plus, he knew a studio that specialized in mariachi recordings. With that exciting news, we gathered three Mexican and three Spanish friends both here in Portugal and in Mexico City. We worked hard to translate two Reset songs into Mexican Spanish while keeping the poetry and rhythm intact.
In November 2023, at Topetitud Studio in Coyoacan, Mexico City, we recorded with Santiago and Patsi Mijare helping arrange everything. The mariachi played their instruments; we handled percussion; everyone took turns singing. Although our Spanish wasn’t good enough to follow all their lively conversations, they later told us how much they enjoyed the songs’ simplicity and clever construction. Watching them have fun was amazing .
