Pavement showed up on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert last night and played “Harness Your Hopes” right on the Ed Sullivan Theater stage.
This TV performance comes as Alex Ross Perry’s movie Pavements drops in select theaters, mixing real life and make-believe in a wild biopic-mockumentary mashup. The soundtrack, which includes a bunch of different tracks, will be out everywhere on May 30 thanks to Matador, and there’s a big list of songs you can see below. There’s rehearsal jams, concert tapes from their reunion, bits of backstage talk, and even some scenes from the Slanted! Enchanted! jukebox musical. One special song is a cover of Jim Pepper’s “Witchitai-To”—Scott Kannberg called it “a new Pavement song” on the Kreative Kontrol podcast.
We think it’s awesome when bands try something new like this.
Some tracks on the album are just Pavement playing, but others feature Joe Keery, Michael Esper, Zoe Lister-Jones, and even Snail Mail jumping in for a tune at the Pavement Museum in NYC. You’ll also find deleted scenes, musical versions of classic songs, and funny movie clips like Bob Nastanovich saying, “Don’t F**k With My Rolls Man.” There’s a mix of live recordings from places like Stockholm, Paris, and Los Angeles, plus rehearsal sessions in LA and Portland.
The full soundtrack list is huge and even includes wild moments like “Joe Keery Sings Range Life at Fake Lollapalooza (Deleted Scene)” and “The Band That Ruined Lollapalooza (Movie Clip).” There’s also a finale from the jukebox musical, and some tracks where Kathryn Gallagher sings “Give It a Day,” and other cast members join in for big group numbers. It’s a wild ride with lots of familiar names popping up in surprising ways, and the song titles are as random as you’d expect from Pavement.
