Rostam and I? Oh, we go way back. We’ve teamed up on a mishmash of projects over the years. Each one? A new adventure, brimming with excitement and creativity. Recently, we huddled up in his studio, diving headfirst into the world of fingerpicking. You know, the good old folk tunes—Fairport Convention, Joni Mitchell, Anne Briggs, Judy Sill. That’s our jam.
It all kicked off with this riff I had. It was rough around the edges, tangled up in a story that was more cloud than clarity. Rostam, with his magic touch, started to untangle it. He simplified the fingerpicking pattern, giving the story and the vibe a sharper focus. Then, he brought in the big guns: a Hammond B3 organ and a mandolin. And Joey, oh Joey, his assistant with those Latin percussion chops, added a whole new layer of rhythm to the mix.
During two whirlwind trips to L.A., we were like mad scientists in the lab. We wrote, scrapped, and recorded the song, almost catching it live as it unfolded. And let me tell you, it’s a fresh direction for us. This song? It’s about the power of imagination. Not in some pie-in-the-sky way, but in a real, grab-the-world-by-the-shoulders kind of way. It’s about bringing those deep-seated desires to life, about catching that fleeting moment right before the dream takes hold.
Rostam and I, we’ve got a thing for songs that walk the line between joy and sorrow. We find beauty in that tension, using it to dive deeper into our feelings, into those visions that keep us up at night.
