Three years back, everyone found out a follow-up to This Is Spinal Tap was actually happening.
Now, out of nowhere, Bleecker Street dropped a trailer that brings Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer back together with Rob Reiner, plus a bunch of surprise faces like Paul McCartney, Elton John, and Questlove showing up for the fun. The new movie, Spinal Tap II: The End Continues, has Reiner once again playing Martin “Marty” Di Bergi, while Guest, McKean, and Shearer return as older, grayer versions of Nigel Tufnel, David St. Hubbins, and Derek Smalls. You can watch the trailer right here.
This sequel is coming to theaters on September 12, which is kind of wild since the first film came out 41 years ago! The story this time? The Spinal Tap guys, now with white hair and stuck in not-so-famous bands, try to team up for one last performance. Di Bergi is there to film it all as they hunt for a twelfth drummer (their last one apparently “sneezed himself to death”), face all their old troubles, and get ready for a big goodbye show. Who knows what kind of chaos will happen?
Fans always get extra excited when a favorite band gets back together, even if things go sideways.
Rob Reiner, McKean, Guest, and Shearer all wrote this new movie, and it’s actually the first time Reiner has directed a story like this since 2017. He also produced the film, working with Michele Reiner and Matthew George.
Honestly, it’s funny how some movies take forever to get a sequel, but maybe that makes it more special—or at least way more unpredictable.
