The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland started their big ceremony last night by celebrating Sly Stone, who passed away earlier this year at 82.
When the bright lights hit the stage, Stevie Wonder, Questlove, Jennifer Hudson, Maxwell, Beck, Flea, and Leon Thomas all showed up to honor Sly and the Family Stone, mixing together their legendary hits in an incredible medley. First, Wonder and Beck both grabbed the mic for a wild, fun version of “Dance to the Music.” Next up, Maxwell took control singing “Everyday People,” and after an absolutely funky jam on “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” Hudson burst out to lead everyone with “Higher.”
Whenever all these famous people hang out on one stage, things get a little extra exciting—this performance was no exception!
We really like when so many artists come together and sing the songs they loved growing up.
Some big names joined the Hall of Fame this year—OutKast, Cyndi Lauper, Soundgarden, The White Stripes, Bad Company, Chubby Checker, and Joe Cocker are in, while Warren Zevon and Salt-N-Pepa took home the Musical Influence Award, too.
If you’re curious about deep dives and thoughtful ideas, you could find Ben Greenman’s essay called “Sly Stone’s Funky Revolution,” which sounds pretty cool even if the title is hard to say three times fast.
