The Hard Quartet Debut Album & Rio’s Song Video Filled With Rolling Stones Easter Eggs

Last month, Stephen Malkmus from Pavement started a new band called the Hard Quartet with Matt Sweeney, Jim White, and Emmett Kelly.

Their first song was “Earth Hater,” and now they have a second one called “Rio’s Song.” This new track has a video with lots of hidden details for Rolling Stones fans. The video is almost exactly like the 1981 video for “Waiting on a Friend.” It even starts with a building where Sweeney used to live, which is also on the cover of Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti. They made this song to remember Rio Hackford. Plus, you’ll see familiar faces like Mark Ibold from Pavement and James Lo from Chavez in the video. Check it out below.

Jared Sherbert directed the video and said working with Matt and Stephen was amazing because their music has been important in his life. Sweeney had the idea to remake “Waiting on a Friend” since it was filmed in their neighborhood near Tompkins Square Park. Sherbert wondered how he could make it feel like ’80s TV again after so many years.

Fans love seeing these cool connections between old music videos and new ones!
