The Mountain Goats Announce New Album & Release Armies of the Lord

After sharing plans for a special 20th-anniversary edition of The Sunset Tree in May, the Mountain Goats have something else up their sleeves: a fresh album is on the way.

The new record, called Through This Fire Across From Peter Balkan, will drop November 7, released by the band on their own Cadmean Dawn label. Leading the way is the song “Armies of the Lord,” which has Lin-Manuel Miranda singing backup—pretty cool, right?

John Darnielle shared the story behind the album, saying, “There were 16 men on a fishing boat, but only three survived the storm, and one of those went missing, and is presumed dead. That leaves me and Peter Balkan, whose health is failing as his apocalyptic visions dissipate in the spray at the shore.”

People really like when musicians work together, and this time Tommy Stinson, Mikaela Davis, Miranda, and Cameron Ralston all joined in after Peter Hughes left the band last year.

Fans sometimes wish they could see what it’s like inside the studio when all these folks are together.

The Mountain Goats are also planning to tour around North America before the year ends, so keep your eyes open if you want to catch them live.
